When is your 1.5 coming out?

The answer is... wait for it.. wait for it..

NOW!

If only i had a nickel for every time someone asked me that over the last week or two :p

This build is based on the official HTC ADP1.5 image. You should install the 1.5 radio from that HTC page before using this build.

Some of the important changes/features

  • I'm now including a much better Superuser app, courtesy of zinx

  • I've rebuilt the kernel and enabled netfilter support, to allow tethering.

  • You can see/download both paid and protected apps in the market

  • Luke's multitouch kernel patch and browser patch have been ported to the .27 kernel and 1.5 browser.

  • Support for the "apps to sdcard" hack. There's not a separate "apps to sdcard" build. You can use the same build whether you are doing apps to sdcard or not. Thanks to haykuro for explaining how he's done this in his images, so I can make my builds compatible. See here for a tutorial on setting this up.

  • I'm not including a recovery image in this build. I ran into some snags getting all of the recovery features to work with the 1.5 recovery image, so I'll forgo that for now. If you don't have a spiffy recovery image yet, I've packaged up the most recent recovery image from JFv1.43 as a separate update.

If you are already running a "rooted" build (ADP/mine/haykuros/the dudes/whatever), it is available for download via the jf updater app (available on the market). If you don't see it, open up the app settings, and choose either ADP1 or "All the updates" for the "System Mod Version" setting.

Or you can always download the update.zip file below and install it yourself. If you have a G1 and this is your first time installing a community firmware, you'll need to follow any of the multitudes of tutorials out there for rooting your phone.

You can try to upgrade without a wipe, but if you run into any problems (for example, su/Superuser doesn't work), you'll need to perform a wipe. If you don't want to wipe, take a nandroid backup before upgrading, so you can revert back to the backup.

  2. Just to be clear, this update is for US users without ADP phones too, right?
If so, which of those links is the link for that?

  8. i have it rooted already how do i update the radio (i changed the file to update.zip) when i turn on my phone (holding the back button & power) i don't get a triangle but instead a android on a skateboard i don't remember downloading it it must have come from an update i did through jf updater. i think it's fast boot.

what im trying to ask how do i update the radio with fastboot install?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thanks. Finally crossing over and rooting.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I just installed it and it works fine except for one thing.

Superuser Permission DOES NOT work at all and of course it doesn't let me use the apps that require ROOT !

btw, I didn't wipe. I installed the radio after the cupcake immediatly.

  16. Big thx for your update sir, i have one big problem! I keep getting process com.android.vending force close!

I must admit i have just moved all to sd, incl dalvik! But i've never had issues with that ever before..

I must admit i did NOT try checking market before going to sd with data! Im eu g1 bought in germany, with a danish sim card (none t-mobile sim) on a t-mobile phone, its not a dev phone!

    ReplyDelete
  17. So thx!
I can run Debian for Android on your RC33.
This time for 1.5 can run it again?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi- will this version include localisation for uk ? eg phone number links etc?

I am currently using the phone on an unlocked o2

    ReplyDelete
  35. Is this build suitable for ppl running your RC9 build or should we wait? Thank you for your work.

  36. im having the same problem.. didn't wipe. and cannot gain SU...is there any way to fix this, i don really wanna have to wipe and have to reinstall everything. help please

  37. Kideve,

You should be able to follow my instructions on getting it working on 1.5 builds. It was written for Haykuro's build but any build that supports apps2sd should work.

  38. Sorry for the possibly stupid question, BUT can I go from a Jf RC9 UK firmware to the JF 1.50 ADP or will there be a separate release????

    Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  39. Will there be (in the near future that is) a non-ADP UK version as well (As to not require a wipe)?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yeah, something is definitely borked. I wiped to "Holiday" default factory settings, and they one kept spitting out the same error whenever I did anything so much as LOOK at the phone.

This update went flawlessly (although I can't see "signed" anymore during the booting process during that main screen) with the exception of the fact that my menu REFUSES to go to the Sync Settings Screen. It's affected my Contacts, Email and Calendar, and I can't even get into Market.

    :-/

    ReplyDelete
  41. Scratch all of that.

Wiped data, reinstalled a fresh download, still had problems, decided to wipe data again.

Was going to install 1.41, but discovered that I had 1.5 and everything was working properly!!!

I'm so confused, but thank you anyway for this update!

  45. Just wondering why you're endorsing an inferior, closed-source product such as aNetShare when there's a much better, open-source WiFi Tether for Root.

Not that you have to explain yourself to me...

    ReplyDelete
  46. .......
I donn't think JF understand chinese.

    ReplyDelete
  47. JesusFreke, many thanks again from the Dutch AndroidClub. Donation made.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thank you JF, your build seems to increase the phone's overall operating speed as opposed to that of the dude's build that I was using. However, I think the pdf reader is missing from your version, is there anyway you can include it in your next build or anyway I can install it manually?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Love it! 2 things though. does 1.5 eliminate my msn messenger and the font sizes doesn't seem to work. (is there a way to increase the font size in my calendar for us blind folks?)

    Keep up the good work!

  55. well i went from rc33 to jf 1.50 adp without any trouble everything works. since rc9 is prtety much the uk version of rc33 i don't think that you will have any trouble.

  56. I wiped my phone and the App Store kept record off all my apps, so it's not to bad, but now i'm going to mess with my SD card.

IT's true, wipe the phone if you can't access root. IT's a pain, but IT's worth doing!

    Many thanks.

  60. Wiiiiiiiiiiiiii

    It WORKED !!

    I moved from JF 1.42 >>>> JF ADP1.5

Didnt loose ANYTHING, everything is working perfectly well incl. Root access :)

Dude.....your a genius ......... Me Donate right now !! You deserve it

    ReplyDelete
  61. Great build JF!
Just wanted to say that I made a successful upgrade from the official 1.5 to this one by flashing from SD card (on a Dev Phone 1) without wiping.
+ I can't see the paid apps (living in Finland), not that I wanted them anyways, just saying...

    ReplyDelete
  62. Well actually, I couldn't get Wifi Tether for Root working with the new version. It'd let me connect to the AdHoc network but would never give me an IP or notify me of the new connect with or without access controls.

aNetShare on the other hand did work.. I wondered if that was the reason JF suggested it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Nice Job, and my nickel is now yours.

  64. there's now auto rotate on this broswer????

    ReplyDelete
  65. Anyone know what, if any, the differences are in the recovery.img for JF 1.42 versus JF 1.43. I have 1.42 now and wonder if I gain anything to go to 1.43?

    TIA!

By the way, this ROM is very nice! Lean and mean... and fast!

    ReplyDelete
  66. i found now to rotate, but there's now IM app

    ReplyDelete
  69. I had the same problem... wiped... and the SU request screen force closes. There goes my Saturday afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm no android /g1 expert. but i can safely say yes it does. you should update the radio

    ReplyDelete
  71. You should read the CHANGE log before you ask any question:

    - added a Browser.apk that includes lukehutch's changes for multitouch zooming, as well as changes I made to enable auto-rotate

    ReplyDelete
  72. The ADP builds have only google talk. I'm sure JF will issue an update with the non ADP roms sometime ...

    ReplyDelete
  73. I dont know about anyone else but after flashing the radio and then this new build I got a looping Android screen. This is coming from a freshly rooted phone... RC29 > 1.5 radio > JF 1.5

Anyone else run into this issue?

I just wiped and re-installed JF 1.5 but not sure if thats gonna lead to any issues since I think that wiped out the radio update.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Performing a wipe clears the cache and data partitions. The radio isn't located on either of those partitions ;)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Same problem here. Su gives a black screen and after a lot of time it force closes, so no root priviliges:-( Problem didn't occur with JF 1.43 (UK edition) so probably has to do with new SU-program.

    ReplyDelete
  76. After the upgrade to JF1.5, first boot takes a loooong time. Be patient. It needs more than 5 minutes in the blue "android" screen. (mine needed about 10')

    ReplyDelete
  77. I DID do a wipe, and it didn't solve this problem.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Thanks JF, _best_ update yet! Successfully went from 1.41 to this without wiping data and with maintaining several folders on my sd (app, app-private system/app). Everything seems to work great!

Had tiny initial problems with dxtop and power manager so I adb shelled into the phone and deleted the packages, reinstalling them from the market. Everything seems to work great, can't wait to get a pair of bluetooth headphones and try out the new AD2P support!!!!!!

  81. after updating via jf updater(first radio then new 1.5 update) the networks were acting screwy(turning on and off continuously) and my market no longer worked...:( it would flash on screen for a sec and then disappear...no good. so i wiped it, reflashed radio, reflashed 1.5 update and all is well(except i need to get all my apps again, but whatever). awesome build!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Same here. Superuser app just freezes on black screen and forces close. Wiped and reinstalled, but same problem.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Just a note that my GScripts no longer launch on this build - got the SuperUser prompt and allowed but scripts just hang. Not sure if it's the GScript launcher or the build. (the same scripts run fine from command line: #sh xxxxx.sh so me thinks it is the GScript app problem).

    ReplyDelete
  84. jf, you da man. i had jf1.42 and wanted to try haykuro's or the dude's builds but didn't get around to it. but when i saw you had a new version, i jumped right in. it rocks.

  88. Is the SD card inside the phone when you START it?
If not, insert it and restart the phone.
    (I just read this somewhere...)

    ReplyDelete
  89. Nice to hearing from you that you are back in game of the best firmware for G1. A lot of things has been changed since your last 1.1-based build. There is the Haykuro's and Dude's build which seams to offer more that your build does.

From my point of view you are missing the following features:
    - SIM ToolKit (STK)
    - HTC Dialer (from Haykuro's H build)
    - PDF Viewer
    - HTC Camera and Camcoder (both brings more options!)
    - more locales (Dude's build has it)

Please keep working and I believe that your build will be soon of the same level as the others.

  91. I didn't install the radio. Does it matter? If so, what will it affect?

    ReplyDelete
  92. The phone's gonna asplode! Everyone run for it!

    ;)

I think the new radio contains a number of improvements. I'm fairly sure it has some significant gps improvements, and it's possible that some stuff in 1.5 is dependent on it being there.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I found that trying to reinstall the JFv1.5 and then letting it try to add itself to the superuser will "fix" this issue.

JFupdater --> verify and apply --> apply now --> update

This allowed me to get SuperUser working again for all apps.

    YMMV

    ReplyDelete
  94. The GPS improvements are probably due to the new support for A-GPS that reportedly is included. This uses the data connection to receive GPS init information from remote servers, and sometimes to offload calculations. Of course this also means leaking some GPS-related data off your phone as well, if you care. By not having to do the painstaking process of GPS init directly from the birds, the time involved can be cut drastically.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Ohh okay thanks for the info...everything works fine now btw.

FYI I did hear about a long first boot so I let it sit about 20 min and it was a no go. Wiped, reflashed and it only took about 2min. For the initial boot.

    ReplyDelete
  96. what the hell? why would try to put someones build down.. for your info, this is the most stable build of them all, JF builds are always stable and awesome usually from the get go... He basically gives you the offcially releases with root/super user access and then adds things like multi touch... As far as the most solid stable build, this is hands down the best, the faster and stable and i have been on every build.. and always reverted bacl to JF rc33 becuase its more stable... Features arent shit with out stability... Show some appreciation, JF started it all

    ReplyDelete
  97. Chill man, chill. Everyone has their opinion :) It's not like I'm competing with hakuro or the dude for "the best rom". Anyone can use whatever rom they like best. If there is some features that you want that mine doesn't have, great! If all of our builds had the exact same features, there wouldn't be much point in having different builds

    ReplyDelete
  98. JesusFreke! Dude.. you ROCK!!! Keep up the great work :)

    ReplyDelete
  99. This is the ADP update? Will there be a JF ROM created for the upcoming T-Mobile G1 OTA update? I'd like to have an IM app and stick as closely to the G1 stuff as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  100. How do i connect to stereo bluetooth???? i have motrola s9's and they won't connect even with update =( jf u still rock =)

    ReplyDelete
  101. is it me or did this new rom take up more phone memory than the last one? after upgrading i deleted a boat load of apps that cupcake made obselete (handcent, steel, dansroid auto rotate,) along with others (YellowBook,BOA,and 2 gps apps) though i deleted all of this i still only have 28mb of space available. i only have 15 apps and most of them are no bigger than 700kb.

so is this new update larger or did something go wrong when updating?

    ReplyDelete
  102. there's plenty of im apps on the market. i just downloaded AIMer to us aim on my g1 but theres also yahoo and msn apps.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Are you SURE it hung? It took me about 10 minutes for it to update everything...

To see what's going on during boot, plug in the usb cable to the phone and from a terminal/command line type:

    adb logcat

And you'll see a log of everything the phone is doing. That way you'll know if you're truly frozen.

(adb should come with the 1.5 sdk btw)

  104. Can someone please explain how to do Apps2SD? I have the Apps2SD program on my SD card. I have this build installed. I have AppsInstaller installed. I have 2 partitions on my memory card. But when I run Apps2SD program, it makes the Android hang.

ALSO, is it ok if i just did a wipe and no update? I've been messing around with my phone (formatted memory card like 50 times and have wiped and updated like 50 times). The last time I just did a wipe and restartted the phone and everything seems to be working. Is this ok or should i do the update? Please help.

  106. Great update.. Love cupcake and some of the options of the DEV build. Great Job JF!!!

One problem I may have caused.. any ideas from the JF/Android community. If I use my Plantronics Headset no one can hear me and I can't hear them... even sounds from the phone are redirected into a black hole. I wiped the phone for this install but I don't have the SDK installed on my PC so I didn't push the radio update. Could this be the cause?

    ReplyDelete
  107. I just updated to JFv1.50 ADP1.5 and I have to say this is exquisite.

The window transformations and effects are very nice
The on-screen keyboard availability for any text input box is quite handy for small edits
The Spare Parts settings are cool
The entire GUI has had a facelift, looks much better now
The overall system seems much faster
System-wide auto-rotate is awesome and has its own effects
It lacks an IM app but there are plenty of those in the market

This is a very nice build and I'm sticking with it.

JF, thank you for all of your hard work, you are appreciated :)

  111. I came over from the Haykuro 1.5r3 and I'm having trouble with my recovery.img. My modified JF1.43 recovery.img was overwritten when I switched to Haykuro. Now that i'm upgrading to JF1.5, it seems that I lost his recovery.img. I tried to flash with the img file above and it looks like everything was installed correctly, but I'm still not booting to the modified recovery console. I still get the phone plus exclamation mark (!) when I boot with Home + Power.

    Any suggestions??

    THanks!

  112. My yahoo email account doesn't work in jf 1.5, it worked fine in jf 1.43.
Keeps saying the username or password are wrong, I know I typed in the correct credentials.

I can't seem to find any decent IM app for yahoo messenger.

I sure hope there will be an updated ROM created for the g1 OTA cupcake update, otherwise I'm going back to jf 1.43, all my friends use yahoo messenger and email. These things worked great in 1.43.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Disregard my last post, I found email and IM apps for Yahoo.
Sorry for the complaints, jfv1.5 really is quite nice.

  114. hi,
i got a new (white) German version, for having root
i downgrade to UK RC7 - using the root entrence (hence, this is never a bug!),
update to jf 1.5 ADP, forgot to read about the radio....
after a wipe it stops reebooting all the time and just works... 3g fails so i remember there is a radio and update it.

    works fine now....

  124. JF, thank you for your hard work. I'm extremely happy with my phone right now.

    To anyone willing to help:

Tethering works perfectly (so effin' sweet!!), so I'm assuming I still have root. But I can't telnet to the phone anymore. It was working with jf1.42. Does this mean I lost root or is it an i-d-10-t (idiot) error?

Also, please note that I'm following the same steps outlined here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480, which is to type "telnetd" at the home screen (which brings up the contacts), then hitting enter. Connection to the phone still fails in the telnet app, though.

To others, I have had no issues with syncing. The radio is solid, as well. Be sure to check out the new app "Spare Parts"!!!

  129. HELP!

JFupdater is picking up the update.

I have the JFv1.50 ADP1.5 (4646) downloaded and renamed update , but before I do wipe I want to install radio as per post from here: http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html

But not sure to to install Radio before the JFv1.5..

Any help would be very appreciated.

    or a link :)

    ReplyDelete
  130. Update the radio first, then the jf1.5 , that's what is recommended and it worked great here.

  132. I'm trying to do Haykuro's tutorial for apps to sd, but when I try to do step 2 in the tutorial i get 'permission denied'.

Did I somehow lose root? I'm a noob when it comes to linux. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  133. YOU ARE THE ONE! I previously went and tried haykuro's build yet got my sd card messed up. Somehow. Tried yours then there you go no problem reading sdcard. Although haykuro's did detect sometimes. Could of been just my luck though. Upgraded sd to class 6. I read other people also had other issues with class 2. So far your build has worked for me, minor touchkeyboard issues yet no big deal. Better though.

  134. The A2DP support now makes my phone everything I wanted it to be! only problem I've seen with this update is that you can't use the onscreen dialpad when using the phone.

  135. It seems that I have bricked my phone. Ive done a wipe, then installed 1.5 radio, then installed 1.5. seems that im stuck on the android screen...it loops.

I started with JF 1.41 lite. any help would be greatly appreciated.

  137. If path looks like this (and it's how it looks :):

    export PATH /usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/system/sbin:/system/bin:/system/xbin:/system/xbin/bb:/data/local/bin

installing debian with unoinfs (Saurik method) creates problems. Instead of android software, it starts using debian. Well, term application refuse to start for example.

Sure it can be solved, but is there any advantages of using usual paths in front of android-specific paths?

  144. Funny enough, I went car shopping this weekend and had no issues with the Nissan Rogue's bluetooth nor the VW Tiguan's bluetooth pairing. Calls were sent and received fine; audio worked as expected.

  145. Download the radio image zip. Rename it to update.zip and put it on the sdcard. Turn off the phone, then turn it on by holding HOME and POWER at the same time. When the boot screen comes up, select option to update using sdcard/update.zip (alt-s, I think). Follow the instructions on the phone to restart it.

All I need now is to some how get the PDF reader?!

  147. I do believe this build was so good that my G1 has gained consciousness. Whats that G1 you wanna thank JF? I am doing that right now... :) anyways thanx a bunch I donated even though I am broke. People if you are broke even $2 from everyone that benefits from his work will help him out. Anyways keep it real. Ciao.

  148. The HTC multifunction adapter is broken with this release. I no longer can get audio out of it unless I first plug in the usb headphones (that came with the phone) and then disconnect it.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

    - german keyboardlayout (both virtual and HW)
    - paid/secured apps (anyone knows why this does not work? is it the MMC/MC settings?)

  151. Hello

I'm running the official 1.5 FW on my ADP1 and sadly they have changed su to be only accessible over the adb shell... I'd like to keep the official 1.5 but want root. Will it be enough to copy over the /bin/su and the superuser apk from JF's build to get root an my ADP?

  154. Updated from JF RC33 to ADP 1.5 using JF Updater without any issues. I did not have to wipe. I just turned off the phone, started it with Home + Power and then pressed ALT+S (first I did it with the Radio update, then I did it with the ADP 1.5 update). I did lose my contacts on the phone for about 10-15 minutes and they would not sync right away but I guess it just needed sometime. The performance improvement and camcorder alone was worth the wait, smooth. Thank you JF for curing the Cupcake hunger pangs...

  155. can some one please explain what this radio thing is all about ??
also can i use this FW even if im in UK ??

  156. Thanks blulight, but no luck for me. I tried every combination of wipe/download/update that I could and it still does not work. I tried testing the Superuser list with JFupdater every time, just to be consistent, but it always forces a close.

    ReplyDelete
  157. At first, Superuser whitelist didn't work. Before wiping or anything, check that 'USB debugging' is checked in the Applications -> Development menu. Probably would do the trick.

  158. Has anyone had the issue after updating with people trying to call you and they get one long ring?

Is this something on my end or do I need to contact T-Mobile?

    ReplyDelete
  159. I installed the new build and had some issues with the call log and dialer force closing, but multi-touch was working. So I did a wipe and now everything works flawless with the exception that I can no longer do multi-touch. Is there something I am missing or not doing? Or did doing the wipe not allow me to have multi-touch? Can someonle please help? lol

  160. Hi, it's my first time here!
I now have the ADP1.5Hr3-A2SD but I'd like to shift to JFv1.50 ADP1.5. but I have some questions!
    1. which are the differences between the two? the first one is a porting from cupcake for magic to dream and the latter is just a mod of cupkace for dream?
    2. do I have to wipe before installing this?
    3. what is the file JFv1.50 ADP1.5 Build Environment? something that I need to install? how?
    thamks

    ReplyDelete
  161. Multi-touch only works in the default browser for me (JFv1.50_ADP1.5).. not sure if this is normal or not.

    ReplyDelete
  162. What do you mean by the default browser? Isnt that the normal browser thats on the home screen? When I open that up it does not allow to use the multi-touch.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Same problem adding myself to this thread...

    ReplyDelete
  164. JF I've loved all your work, and I can update to 1.5 just fine, however after the update, once I reboot the phone loops. I got the logcat from adb

    W/dalvikvm( 415): Exception Ljava/lang/IndexOutOfBoundsException; thrown during Landroid/text/Html$HtmlParser;.

    D/AndroidRuntime( 415): Shutting down VM
    W/dalvikvm( 415): threadid=3: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x4000fe70)

I came from even a fresh RC33 and an sd card with only the update on it and I get the same thing. If I go back do RC33 everything works great still. Ive tried doing it with and without a wipe

    ReplyDelete
  165. Is it just me, or is Google Latitude missing from this version? It was included in JFv1.42 for RC33, where'd it go? Is there a way to install it as an app or something?

    ReplyDelete
  166. sorry guys, i c the photo gps location IS stored. 'Cause when I upload to picassa, the gps loc. is gone @_@

    ReplyDelete
  167. Thank you, JF for putting this together!

One question: I did a wipe and update and everything seemed perfect but now, out of the blue, the desktop and login screen don't auto-rotate. They did at first, but don't now. All the apps - both built-in and third-party - still auto-rotate, so it's very odd. As far as I can tell, just the desktop and the login sceen don't auto-rotate now. I could live with that, but would like to know if anyone else has seen this happen. I've tried rebooting several times.

  168. Appreciate ur hard work, money on the way.

  169. the "type smth at homescreen" trick doesn't work with newer versions of android.
Install terminal emulator from market, open it, type "su" , allow root access if asked from super user app, and type telnetd.

    Works only for rooted phones

    ReplyDelete
  170. @Ippe Ziepe

You win! Enabling USB debugging did it without even a reboot! I guess that is why a wipe *sometimes* worked for people?

Spread the word - I know others have this problem!!!

  175. Update: Known bug http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2534

  176. It will hang if you don't have enough space in your /data partition to begin with. It's better if you delete all the caches before doing the upgrade. Happened to me, after 30 minutes it was still in the blue android screen. After quite a bit of debugging with adb I figured out the space problem, restored my nandroid backup, deleted all caches, and retried the upgrade. Worked well the second time but now my Market and Sync Settings are borked. Any ideas on that?

    ReplyDelete
  177. Yep! Great Ippe indeed that does the trick! I'm happy with that thanks a lot. It fixes the problem right a way.

  179. ad 1) JF build doesn't have SIM Toolkit, Exchange Sync, HTC Keyboard (some special characters are missing), HTC Dialer, Teeter game, HTC Email.

    ad 2) It is recommended.

ad 3) As far I understand it, Build Environment is heap of files necessary to compile the JF build from source codes. So it is not necessary to download and install it if you are going to use JF build.
